Behavior
Behavior issues are a common veterinary concern, and most of these issues are rooted in fear and anxiety. Fear and anxiety can develop over time, often starting with a deficit in adequate socialization as kittens, and reinforced by negative experiences during their lifetime. Chronic stress and traumatic events can also be a culprit. Regardless of the cause, behavior issues can show up in a variety of ways, including:
Inappropriate urination or defecation
Aggression towards people, other cats, or other animals
Hiding and reluctance to interact
Excessive vocalization
Destructive behaviors
While complicated behavioral issues often require the experience of a board certified veterinary behaviorist, many issues can be addressed at the general practice level. During our behavior appointments, we work to identify the underlying cause of each behavior concern, and our treatment plans include safety management, medications, supplements, tools, and training. If a case requires the expertise of a behaviorist, we will refer to one of our local veterinary behavior clinics.
